HUMANE EDUCATION
Humane education is founded upon the belief that human rights, environmental preservation, and animal protection are integral aspects of a just, peaceful, and healthy world—and that we are all capable of and responsible for creating such a world.

THE BOND ~ OUR KINSHIP WITH ANIMALS, OUR CALL TO DEFEND THEM
As a trans-species psychology-oriented organization, One Heart Wild Education Sanctuary understands that what hurts human animals hurts non-human animals, too. OHW advocates for health and wellness for all animals. We adhere to a minimum of The Five Freedoms, and we believe we can do much better. We must do better!
The 4 Elements of Humane Education
(from the Institute for Humane Education)
- Providing accurate information
(so we have the knowledge to face challenges); - Fostering the 3C’s: curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking
(so we have the tools to meet challenges); - Instilling the 3R’s: reverence, respect, and responsibility
(so we have the motivation to confront challenges); - Offering positive choices and tools for problem solving
(so we will be able to solve challenges).
"It’s time to make living ethically, sustainably, and peaceably on this planet the very purpose of education."
Zoe Weil, IHE President.
The five freedoms, sometimes known as Brambell’s five freedoms, are a compact of rights for animals under human control. The five freedoms were originally developed from a UK Government report on livestock husbandry in 1965. The five freedoms are used as the basis for the actions of professional groups, including vets, and have been adopted by representative groups internationally including the World Organization for Animal Health.
Many nonhuman animals today who are kept by humans are not allowed these five freedoms and suffer physically, mentally, and emotionally as a result.
Nonhuman animals in our industrialized farming system are hard pressed to be afforded more than 1 freedom, a miserable, devastating and inhumane existence for a thinking, feeling, social animal. We are the only animal in the kingdom that intentional causes pain and suffering for other animals enmass. We must do better for ourselves and for others because we can.
The science is clear about trauma; prolonged exposure to the stress hormone cortisol changes the areas of the brain that impact behavior and emotional wellness, and ultimately affect the physical body in many ways. A nonhuman animal who has suffered chronic stress all of it's life has a body full of trauma and a life experience of immense suffering.
We encourage people to be conscious consumers when it comes to purchasing and consuming nonhuman animals. If meat, eggs and dairy are part of your diet, seek suppliers where the nonhuman animals are provided a living that meets the 5 Freedoms and a humane end of life?
We ask you to think about where your food comes from and make choices that demand humane treatment.
What are the Five Freedoms for Animals?
- Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.
- Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
- Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
- Freedom to express normal behaviour by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
- Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
